Overview

A 900-page portrait of nineteenth century provincial life, George Eliot’s masterpiece Middlemarch frequently tops polls for the greatest novel of all time – as voted by writers, academics and critics.

Virgina Woolf called it ‘one of the few English novels written for grown-up people’ and, more than a century later, Martin Amis declared it ‘a novel without weaknesses.’

Set just before the Reform Act of 1832 and the arrival of railways, England is on the brink of massive social change. Eliot’s characters too want to change the world. But the reality of their ideals ends up changing them.

Join us to discuss whether Middlemarch lives up to its reputation as the greatest novel in the English language.
