Delia Derbyshire and The BBC Radiophonic Workshop

Caroline Churchill
Tuesday, 13 July 2021 - 6:30pm

Caroline Churchill (who works under her professional name of ‘Caro C’) will talk about The BBC Radiophonic Workshop (1958 to the late 1990s), a somewhat obscure department of the BBC that provided sound and music for TV and radio. With no “real” musical instruments this department became synonymous with invention, innovation, “found sounds” and other creativity as the world of music technology was developing in the UK.

Arguably their most famous output, the iconic Dr Who theme, will be deconstructed as a fine example of the visionary and collaborative work of the Radiophonic Workshop. Caro will unpack who actually made the original Dr Who theme and how it was made, passing on accounts from one of the producers of the theme.

The talk will explore this hub of British pioneers who infiltrated the consciousness of many an electronic music artist and producer today (of a certain age) via childhood radio and TV.
