Churches Past and Present: a walking tour - Members Only
This walk will be lead by Andrew Derbyshire, a qualified Manchester Tourist Guide who has also studied local religious history. It will trace the Christian history of Manchester and Salford via its religious buildings, statues and memorials.
The national story of Christianity from the seventh century to the twenty first century is reflected in the walk, but the theme of local variation is clear. The trail starts at the south porch of the Parish Church, now the Cathedral but also a Collegiate Church, which is the mother church of the area. Religious expansion, diversity and conflict emerge from a trail to other buildings, and to statues and memorials in the centre of the two cities. The walk ends at the John Rylands Library at about 12.30pm. Following this, there will be tea/coffee/soft drinks/light refreshments available at the Lit & Phil offices at Church House, 90, Deansgate M3 2GP.
